As this edition of New Agriculturist is uploaded to the Internet, preparations are well in hand for November's World Food Summit. It is now, rather than afterwards, that thought will be given to what should be presented, what should be proposed and what is the point. So many in the world are still hungry and yet poverty, rather than shortage of food per se, is the overriding problem. "The paradox of hunger in the midst of plenty", says M.S. Swaminathan in his Perspective. Food security, food aid, and agricultural planning are also discussed In Print in Food Security in sub-Saharan Africa. This edition of New Agriculturist also echoes Dr Swaminathan's call for the need to combine the best in traditional wisdom and cutting edge science. Striking a 'COARD' in Uganda explains how farmers' knowledge in Uganda is being harmonized with agricultural research. From India, From darkness to light reveals how scientists and farmers have combined to establish simple, village level manufacture of a biological crop protection spray based on a fatal virus disease of pod borers. We have News of rats and rice (The lure of success) and ask whether we should be Putting up with pesticides?, a perennial problem covered also In Print with Learning to cut the chemicals in cotton. For while the world waits for cuts in agricultural subsidies and more equitable trade, agricultural productivity would soar higher than any Summit if only losses from pests and diseases could be categorically cut. As water scarcity and hunger dance hand in hand, we present Points of View on how we should be Running water. And to lighten the spirits, we offer our readers a bouquet of flowers this month as we Focus on floriculture. Please let us know if you experience any problems with accessing New Agriculturist.
