Back to current edition
From Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, our focus is on horticulture in this edition of New Agriculturist. The theme is competition: against pests and diseases; between large and small scale growers; to produce what the market wants; and to the standard the market demands whether at home or overseas. In Developments, we turn from competition to co-operation. Mountain and lowland farmers in Ethiopia are discovering that mutual understanding and co-operation over natural resources management is improving the farming environment and reducing the pressures that had led to conflict. And in Bangladesh, co-operation between donors, farm power research and NGOs is helping to generate income for a forgotten group in development - the disabled. Also in Developments, we feature two articles on making useful products out of waste, both of which relate to water. The 3rd World Water Forum largely failed to spur international consensus on how to tackle a looming global water shortage. Maude Barlow who represented an NGO standpoint at the Forum gives us her Perspective. Her book, Blue Gold, is featured In Print. Our picture feature on Syria's Khanasser Valley clearly shows the challenges of making a livelihood out of farming where water is scarce.
