This has surely been an exceptionally bad year for floods; The Philippines, China, Bangladesh, and Central America, to name but a few of the countries and regions where farming families have had their homes and their livelihoods washed away. Of course natural phenomena are not unusual but today's fast moving news services tell us what is happening, as it happens, affecting us more deeply than in the days when news was slower and more properly assigned to the past than the present. Wanting to be aware of what is happening, what is being done and what could be done is, perhaps, a characteristic that defines our readers.

From the Perspective of a man who brings the Internet down to earth, to our Focus on fertilizer, we hope that this edition of New Agriculturist will help to keep you informed, and aware of what could be done to make farming more productive, and the lives of farming families less precarious. Floods we can do little about but we can, perhaps, make some small contribution to an awareness that good farming can help to reduce the level of devastation when those floods occur.
