In this section, the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR) highlights a range of articles and programmes describing advances in Agricultural Research for Development (ARD). A selection of brief news items based around recent international and regional events and meetings concerned with agricultural innovation and its implications in development are presented and links to further information are provided under each item.
Agricultural innovation systems e-conference
FAO is hosting a moderated e-mail conference from 4 June to 1 July 2012 on 'Ensuring the full participation of family farmers in agricultural innovation systems: Key issues and case studies'. The e-mail conference will focus on the issues that determine whether family farmers can fully participate in, and benefit from, agricultural innovation systems (AIS). What are the key opportunities and hurdles for family farmers to engage in, and benefit from, AIS and what can policy-makers do to increase potential opportunities and remove potential hurdles? Louis Malassis International Scientific Prize seeks nominations
The Louis Malassis International Scientific Prize for Agriculture and Food aims to recognise individuals, or a group, for their exemplary and promising contribution in promoting innovation through research, development and capacity building, in order to improve food and agricultural systems sustainability as well as contribute to addressing food security and poverty reduction. The deadline for nominations is 16 July 2012.

Lecture held on the future of the land
Sustainable intensification of agriculture, a more robust food system and mainstreaming of biodiversity considerations in land use planning are fundamental policy areas that need to be addressed, Dr Maurits van den Berg has stated in a recent lecture on the future of the land.

Empowering women in agriculture
Over 750 participants from 50 countries have gathered in Delhi to call for collective action and investment to put the needs of women farmers at the centre of agricultural thinking and practice. High-level policy discussions identified reforms and institutional changes needed for empowering women in agriculture, which will form the basis for wider collective action through GFAR's Gender in Agriculture Partnership.

Neglecting women hinders ability to resolve threats to food security
As developing countries battle multiple threats to food security - soaring prices, crop-crushing weather extremes and dramatic population growth - agriculture experts gathering in New Delhi this week warn that efforts to boost food production and reduce malnutrition risk failure if they continue to ignore the important role of women farmers around the world.

Global conference on women in agriculture
In March, hundreds of participants will gather in India for the first international conference to comprehensively address the gender gap in agriculture. Organised by GFAR, the conference hopes to highlight policies and reforms that empower women in developing countries to improve agricultural productivity and nutrition and reduce hunger and poverty. GFAR-supported participant gives view on COP 17

Tracking investments in agricultural research for development
At present there is often little clarity on the source of funds for agriculture and rural development, nor effective systems to track these investments to provide evidence of impact and justify increased investment. Recognising this, the organisers of a technical workshop on tracking investments in agricultural research for develoipment have released a summary of the meeting and recommendations.

Adaptation to climatic changes through global cooperation
Climatic changes affect the four dimensions of food security: availability, accessibility, food utilisation and food system stability. It is evident that a new way of thinking is to be applied by all governments around the globe, a "Global Thinking". Global cooperation is to be promoted with governments being realistic, so as to accept and adapt to the unavoidable coming alternations, due to the climatic changes.
