After gaining independence in 1960, the agricultural sector saw significant growth and by 1980 Côte d'Ivoire was the world's leading exporter of cocoa. But drought and a world recession in the early 1980s contributed to the tripling of the country's external debt while political turmoil and civil war since 2002 have continued to undermine the economy.
