Peru's Inca civilisation developed sophisticated farming systems to exploit the steep Andean mountainsides. In modern Peru those living in the Andean region are amongst the poorest in the country. Roughly half the agricultural output of Peru comes from a narrow coastal strip, extensively irrigated.
