Beating the heat

Beating the heat

In spring, the heat in the Shivaliks is so intense, the leaves fall from the trees and water sources dry up, so Van Gujjars migrate up to the Himalayas, where there is plenty of grass for the buffaloes to graze on all summer long. They return to the Shivaliks in October, after monsoon rains have rejuvenated the jungle.
